The Apps4Finland 2013 competition seeks best innovations that make use of Finnish open data. Statistics Finland participates in the competition as a partner for the second time.
Participation in the organisation of the competition is part of the work Statistics Finland is doing to increase the use and influence of statistics in society. Statistics Finland challenges the participants to seek new and innovative ways to utilise statistical data.
The free-of-charge data in Statistics Finland's web service can be freely utilised provided the source is mentioned. Statistics Finland also has separately released technical interfaces to the StatFin database that contains thousands of tables, to the Eurostat's key tables database and to spatial data sets (so-called Inspire data sets) to ease further utilisation of data.
This year, the competition is renewed and it is developed to better support communal problem solving, for instance, through a new challenge series. A support network is also created during the competition, which helps users utilise open data to solve the challenges.
In the Apps4Finland competition, the awards are monetary prizes and plenty of visibility for good ideas. The competition has four main categories. The themes include health and well-being, culture and history, democracy, and energy and transport. The precise challenges of the challenge series in the competition will be released in August and the competition will end on 27 October 2013.
The competition is organised for the fifth time by Forum Virium Helsinki and the Finnish Association for Online Democracy.
