The team representing Finland from Lyseonpuisto Upper Secondary School, Rovaniemi has won for the third successive time the upper secondary school category in the International Statistical Literacy Competition. The team included Riikka Ylikulppi and Riikka Muje.
The teams from the Lyseonpuisto Upper Secondary School participating in the International Statistical Literacy Competition have been trained by the same teacher, Raimo Huhtala, every time.
The team from Dominican College from Ireland came second and the team from the Italian Liceo Statale "Giovanni Pascoli" - Indirizzo Pedagogico-Sociale came third in the upper secondary school category in the International Statistical Literacy Competition.
Daejon Minjeon Middle School from South Korea was declared champion in the secondary school category. The second prize was awarded to the team from Australia and the Irish team took third place. The results were made public at the World Congress of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in Hong Kong on 29 August 2013.
A total of 7,191 students from 30 countries took part in this international competition organised for the third time. The aim of the competition intended for secondary school and upper secondary school students was to improve the abilities of young people in describing their environment with the help of statistics and in using statistics in their everyday life.
The competition was organised by the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP) of the International Association of Statistical Education (IASE), which promotes the teaching of statistics and statistical literacy, and operates under the auspices of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). The qualifying round in Finland was organised by Statistics Finland, the Finnish Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics (MAOL) and the Finnish Statistical Society.
The competition in Finland was sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Economic Information Office and Perkko Oy.
