Statistics in the media competition

In honour of Finland's centenary, Statistics Finland will arrange a competition on the utilisation of statistics in the media. The competition will run between 6 December 2016 and 1 October 2017.

Participation in the competition

It is possible to take part in the Statistics in the media competition with an article, data visualisation, infographics, video or animation, for example. The producer can personally send their entry or a work made by someone else can be proposed to the competition. The same person can submit more than one entry to the competition. The entry must be published in Finland either in a printed paper, web media or electronic media between 6 December 2016 and 1 October 2017. The entries can be in Finnish, Swedish or English.

It is possible to participate in the competition by sending the entry to Statistics Finland either as a PDF version or as a link by email to or as a paper version or a record to the address Statistics Finland, Communication, PO Box 2C, FI-00222 STATISTICS FINLAND (mark the envelope with "Statistics in the media competition").

The entries should be at Statistics Finland by 2 October 2017 at 3 pm.

Data produced by Statistics Finland’s staff cannot enter the competition.

Selection of the winner       

A panel named by Statistics Finland will select the winning entry and its producer/producers will be awarded.

The following evaluation criteria are used in the selection:

  • Statistics have a major role in the entry
  • The entry is interesting and has an impact on society
  • Statistics are used in an innovative and illustrative manner 
  • The entry increases understanding of statistics and their uses
  • The entry produces new insights about statistics.


The prize for the statistics in the media competition is EUR 2,000 (liable to taxation). The winner/winners will be published towards the end of 2017.
