Schools are challenged to participate in the International Statistical Literacy Competition

Finnish schools are challenged to take part in the International Statistical Literacy Competition. The aim of the poster competition, which is intended for secondary and upper secondary school students, is to improve the abilities of young people in describing their environment with the help of statistics and in using statistics in their everyday life.

The theme of the competition organised for the fourth time can be selected freely. Competing students will work as groups to design a poster exploiting statistics.

Finland's best posters will compete in the international final

The competition has two categories: secondary and upper secondary school students. The best poster in each category from every participating school qualifies to the national final. The best Finnish posters will continue to the international final. Last time, 7,191 students from 30 counties participated in the international competition.

Students are registered into the competition through their teachers. The competition language is English or the native language of the participants. Participation does not cost anything.

Finnish students have done well in the competition

The previous poster competition was held in 2012 to 2013. Finland's score in it was excellent. The team from Lyseonpuisto Upper Secondary School, Rovaniemi won the upper secondary school category in the International Statistical Literacy Competition. Finnish schools have placed well in the competition previously as well. Finnish students have won in every international competition.

The competition is organised by the International Statistical Literacy Project ( ISLP) of the International Association of Statistical Education (IASE), which promotes the teaching of statistics and statistical literacy, and operates under the auspices of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). In Finland, the competition organisers are Statistics Finland, the Finish Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics (MAOL) and the Finnish Statistical Society.

Phases of the competition

  1. Students can register into the competition through their teacher via the website of the ISLP. Registration began on 7 April 2014.
  2. The schools' winning posters are delivered to the country coordinator of the Finnish competition, Jaana Kesti (jaana.kesti@stat.fi) by 1 February 2015 (one poster from one school per category).
  3. The assessment of the best Finnish posters will take place in February 2015.
  4. The international final, i.e. the assessment of the posters sent in by different countries will be arranged in spring 2015.
  5. The winners will be published in Rio de Janeiro in July 2015.
