Welcome to the Presidency Website of Statistics Finland

Dear visitor,

As of the 1st of July and until the 31st December 2006, Finland is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Ministers of the Member States meet within the Council of the European Union, and the main task of the Presidency is to prepare and direct the Council's work and meetings. The Council of the European Union passes laws, usually legislating jointly with the European Parliament. The Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates every six months.

During the Finnish Presidency, Statistics Finland is preparing, chairing and convening most of the meetings of the Council Working Party on Statistics (STATIS). Meetings dealing with dossiers in the field of agricultural, forestry and fishery statistics will be chaired by the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In the field of statistics, the Finnish Presidency will build on the progress made by previous Presidencies and pursue work on improving the governance of the European Statistical System.

The priorities set by Statistics Finland during the Finnish Presidency are:

  1. Strengthening the European Statistical System by promoting all measures to implement European standards on the independence, integrity and accountability of the national and Community statistical authorities.
  2. In the action for re-balancing of priorities emphasis will be placed on achieving concrete results and practical application of the priority assessment framework.
  3. Completing legislative dossiers that are already well advanced and achieving progress on newly initiated dossiers.

This website will provide useful information on the progress made on each legislative statistics dossier and offer useful links to other relevant websites in connection with the Presidency. It will be updated regularly during the period of July to December 2006.

If you have any questions or remarks, please feel free to contact the Presidency team at Statistics Finland.

We look forward to successful co-operation with all partners of the European Statistical System during the Finnish Presidency.

Heli Jeskanen-Sundström
Director General
