International statistical conference attracts 2,100 participants

The conference of the International Statistical Institute, ISI will open at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki today. The total number of registered participants is 2,120, of whom 1,875 are actual participants and 245 accompanying persons. The largest groups of participants, after Finland, are from the United States (174 participants), Japan (98), Germany (76) and France (63). Conference guests also come from Mali, Mauritius, Côte d'Ivoire and Guatemala, for example.

More than 800 papers will be presented at over 80 meetings during the conference. In addition, several administrative meetings of the ISI will be held at Finlandia Hall.

The social programme of the conference includes a concert at the Temppeliaukio church and excursions to the Suomenlinna Fortress and the Turku archipelago. Conference guests can also make trips in Finland or the neighbouring areas before or after the conference. Preliminary bookings indicate that tours to St. Petersburg and Lapland, in particular, are popular.

The statistical world conference is arranged every second year. The previous conference was held in Istanbul, the next one will take place in Seoul and the 2003 conference in Berlin. The future host cities will introduce themselves in an exhibition at the Helsinki conference.

The Opening Ceremony of the 52nd Session of the ISI will commence at 4 p.m. today. The Main Speaker will be Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen.
