The Labour Force Survey collects statistical data on employment, unemployment, various employment relationships and working hours among the population aged between 15 and 74 as well as on the activity of the inactive population and on employment of households. In addition, a so-called ad hoc module with annually changing topics is carried out in connection with the Labour Force Survey. The majority of the data collected are required by the EU Regulation.
The Labour Force Survey data collection is based on a random sample drawn twice a year from Statistics Finland’s population database. The data are collected with computer-assisted telephone interviews and the monthly sample consists of some 12,000 persons. One respondent is interviewed altogether five times. Based on the information provided by the respondents, a picture emerges of the activities of the entire population aged between 15 and 74.
Provision of data for the Labour Force Survey is voluntary. The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the provided data as confidential.
The data content and data collection method of the Labour Force Survey have been revised as from the beginning of 2008 to comply with the EU Regulation concerning the Labour Force Survey. In this connection the data content expanded and the definitions of some concepts became revised.
