<title>Rents rose by 2.9 per cent in the year</title>

<description>During the last quarter of 2011, the year-on-year increase in rents was 2.9 per cent. The rents of non-subsidised rental dwellings went up by an average of 3.1 per cent in the whole country. In the Greater Helsinki Area the rents of non-subsidised rental dwellings went up by 3.6 per cent and in the rest of Finland by 2.8 per cent. The rents of government subsidised dwellings rose by 2.6 per cent in the whole country. Compared to the previous quarter, the rents of non-subsidised dwellings increased by an average of 1.2 per cent and the rents of government subsidised dwellings by 0.4 per cent.</description>

<title>Thirty per cent of permanently occupied dwellings rented dwellings</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland's data, 30 per cent of permanently occupied dwellings were rented dwellings at the end of 2010. In all, 2,537,000 dwellings were permanently occupied. In relative terms, the highest numbers of rented dwellings were in Helsinki, nearly one half (47%) of the occupied dwelling stock. In other university towns student flats also increase the number of rented dwellings. Over 40 per cent of the permanently occupied dwelling stock was made up of rented dwellings in Tampere, Turku, Oulu and Jyväskylä as well.</description>

In the revision, around 30,000 government-subsidised rental dwellings were changed into non-subsidised rental dwellings. Due to the revision, year-on-year changes in rents of dwellings were 0.5 to 0.7 percentage points higher than previously reported.</description>

<title>Länsi-Turunmaa is the municipality with highest number of free-time residences 2010</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, there were 489,000 free-time residences in Finland at the end of 2010. In terms of absolute numbers, the municipality of Länsi-Turunmaa had the highest quantity of free-time residences, or over 8,000. Hämeenlinna, Kouvola, Salo, Kuopio,Kuusamo and Raasepori had the next largest numbers of free-time residences. In each of them the stock of free-time residences exceeded 6,000. As a result of municipal mergers, the number of free-time residences in many urban municipalities rather describes the volume of summer housing in the region than free-time residences located in the urban area.</description>

Most of the growth was due to increases in the numbers of one and two-person household-dwelling units. The number of one-person household-dwelling units increased by 15,000 and that of two-person household-dwelling units by 6,000. By contrast, the number of larger household-dwelling units with at least three members decreased by about one thousand.</description>

<title>Mainly household-dwelling units of one to two persons in rented dwellings</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland's data, the majority of those living in rented dwellings, 85 per cent, were living alone or together with another person, while in owner-occupied dwellings the corresponding share was 68 per cent. Seven per cent of the household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings and 19 per cent of those living in owner-occupied dwellings were larger household-dwelling units with at least four persons. At the end of 2009, the number of permanently occupied rented dwellings was around 763,000, of which 48 per cent were government-subsidised or interest-subsidised rented dwellings.</description>
