According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, consumption of hard coal increased by 31 per cent in January to March this year from the respective period of last year. Its total consumption as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat amounted to 1.8 million tonnes, corresponding to 45 petajoules in energy content.
Total energy consumption fell by 2 per cent in 2012

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption in 2012 amounted to around 1,367 PJ (petajoule), or 380 TW (terawatt hours), which was two per cent less than in 2011. Consumption of electricity amounted to 85.2 TWh, up by 1.1 per cent year-on-year. Consumption of energy decreased by two per cent in transport and manufacturing, but the use of heating energy of buildings increased by over six per cent. Net imports of electricity to Finland went up by nearly 26 per cent. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy diminished by close on eight per cent because six per cent less fossil fuels and 22 per cent less peat were used. The use of principally renewable energy went up by five per cent, since the energy produced with fossil fuels and peat was replaced more with imported electricity as well as with wood and domestic hydro power. According to preliminary data for 2012, renewable energy accounted for 30 per cent of total energy consumption.

Prices of heating and transport fuels increased

The taxation of fuels used in energy production became tighter at the beginning of the year. The prices of district heat went up, as did the prices of transport fuels in 2012. The price difference between diesel and petrol has narrowed down to a smaller one. The prices of hard coal and natural gas have fallen in the latter part of 2012. Although the consumption of electricity grew in 2012, consumer prices of electricity still continued to fall in the fourth quarter of the year compared with one year earlier. However, total prices of electricity for enterprise and corporate customers started to rise in September. The cheaper Nordic electricity produced with hydro power has been well available and it has replaced imports of electricity from Russia. The data are based on energy price data published by Statistics Finland.

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption in the January to September period of 2012 amounted to around 989 PJ, which was five per cent less than in the corresponding period of 2011. The share of renewable energy of total energy consumption grew as the consumption of fossil fuels decreased and correspondingly, that of hydro and wind power increased. Total electricity consumption amounted to 62 TWh, which was over one per cent less than one year earlier. Electricity consumption decreased because around six per cent less electricity was used in manufacturing. However, electricity consumption started to grow in September. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy decreased by 12 per cent.

The increase in excise duty particularly influenced the price of diesel oil. In the early part of the year, diesel oil was nearly 20 per cent higher than one year previously. The price of coal used in production of electricity and heat started to fall.

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 1,386 PJ (petajoule), or 386 TWh in 2011, which was over five per cent less than in 2010. Consumption of elec-tricity amounted to 84.4 TWh, down by 3.8 per cent from the year before. Energy consumption de-creased most in manufacturing and space heating of buildings due to fallen manufacturing output and the mild weather towards the end of 2011. Net imports of electricity into Finland increased by nearly 32 per cent, partly due to the good hydropower situation in the Nordic Countries. Carbon dioxide emis-sions from the production and use of energy diminished by over 11 per cent because 11 per cent less fossil fuels and eight per cent less peat were used. The use of renewable energy fell by three per cent. According to preliminary data for 2011, renewable energy accounted for under 28 per cent of total en-ergy consumption.
