<title>A total of 29,400 university degrees were attained in 2012</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, a total of 29,400 university degrees were attained in Finland in 2012. The number of lower university degrees was 13,100 and that of higher university degrees 13,800. Completed degrees at the doctorate level numbered 1,660. Sixty per cent of those that completed lower or higher university degrees and 52 per cent of those that completed doctorate degrees were women. The share of foreigners among all completed degrees was five per cent, but the share was as high as 16 per cent among doctorate degrees.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, the number of students in curriculum-based vocational education provided by educational institutions was 132,600 in 2012. New students numbered 50,000. The number of students and new students was one per cent lower then one year previously. Fifty-three per cent of students were men. The majority of students were studying in the fields of technology and transport (42 per cent), welfare and health (16 per cent) and tourism, catering and home economics (12 per cent). Data on students describe the situation of 20 september.</description>

<title>Intensified or special support was received by 13 per cent of comprehensive school pupils</title>

<description>Intensified or special support was received by 12.7 per cent of comprehensive school pupils in autumn 2012. Their share was good one percentage point higher than in 2011. The number of pupils receiving intensified support, which is not as extensive as special support, increased by 53 per cent from 2011 to 27,400 pupils, while the number of pupils receiving special support decreased by seven per cent to 41,000 pupils. Of the pupils receiving special support, 52 per cent received at least 80 per cent of their teaching in a special group. These data derive from Statistics Finlands education statistics.</description>

The percentages of pupils studying other foreign languages remained at 5 per cent or below.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, current expenditure on the regular education system increased by 3.5 per cent in 2011 compared with the previous year. Current expenditure on the regular education system totalled EUR 11.9 billion in 2011. Expenditure on comprehensive school education constitutes the biggest proportion of the current expenditure on the regular education system. Expenditure on comprehensive school education was EUR 4.2 billion in 2011. The next biggest proportions were university education and research, on which EUR 2.3 billion was expended, and vocational education on which EUR 1.7 billion was spent.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, a total of 169,000 students attended university education leading to a degree in 2012. The number of students grew by one per cent compared to the previous year. 96,200 students were studying for a university Bachelor's degree and 48,000 for a higher university degree (Master). There were 4,200 students studying for professional specialisation in medicine, veterinary and dentistry and 1,900 studying for licentiate's degrees. The share of those studying for a doctoral degree among all students was 11 per cent, or 18,700 students.</description>

The sum is ten per cent higher compared to 2005, but if the changes in the level of costs are taken into account, the investment of enterprises in course training per employee has actually decreased to some degree in real terms 1) . In 2010, the share of training costs of labour costs was 1.4 per cent in Finland, which was 0.1 percentage points lower than in 2005 when the data were last collected.</description>

<description>In all, 5.7 per cent of students attending education leading to a qualification or degree discontinued their studies and did not resume them in any education leading to a qualification or degree during the 2010/2011 academic year. In upper secondary general education, the discontinuation percentage was 4.0, in vocational education aimed at young people it was 9.1, in polytechnic education, 8.8 and in university education, 6.5 per cent. In upper secondary general education and in vocational education, discontinuation remained unchanged compared to the previous academic year but in polytechnic and university education, discontinuation increased. <description>According to Statistics Finland, university education was completed by 49 per cent of students in about five-and-a-half years, a higher university degree by 21 per cent and a lower university degree by 28 per cent. The pass rate for university education improved by two percentage points. In other sectors of education, the pass rate improved by one percentage point. The pass rate for a polytechnic degree in four-and-a-half years was 41 per cent. Initial vocational education was passed in three-and-a-half years by 65 per cent, and matriculation examination by 80 per cent.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, the majority of recent graduates found employment more easily in 2011 than one year earlier. The employment of graduates with upper secondary vocational qualifications improved most, or by good two percentage points. Of them, 71 per cent were employed and 12 per cent were unemployed. Three-quarters of unemployed persons were aged under 30. Employment was found by 87 per cent of those with polytechnic degrees, by 88 per cent of those with higher university degrees, such as master's degrees, similarly by 88 per cent of those with doctor's degrees. Employment of recent graduates has improved or remained unchanged during good ten years despite the weakening of employment in 2009.</description>
