Changes in waste treatment

Waste treatment is going through a powerful period of change. In 2011, 22 per cent more waste was incinerated than in the year before, amounting to over ten million tonnes. Wood residue of manufacturing and other production and municipal waste were used to produce over ten per cent of total energy consumption and over one fifth if black liquor from the forest industry is included. Waste was also recycled more than one year previously. The amount of recycled waste rose by 18 per cent, to nearly 34 million tonnes. In contrast, 19 per cent less waste was placed at landfill sites or long-term deposits than in the year before.

Greenhouse gas emissions in Finland at the lowest level since 1990

Preliminary total greenhouse gas emissions in 2012 amounted to 61.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (t CO2 eq.). According to preliminary data, total emissions in 2012 decreased by some eight per cent (six million t CO2 eq.) from 2011. The energy sector's emissions diminished by around nine per cent. This was mainly due to reduced consumption of coal and peat and increased net imports of electricity.

Majority of environmental protection investments in industry into air protection in 2011

Environmental protection investments in industry increased from the previous years and amounted to close on EUR 260 million in 2011. Of the sectors of industry, the biggest investors were energy production and the chemical industry. Environmental protection investments were allocated most to air protection and waste management and soil protection. Of all environmental protection expenditure in industry, the biggest part was formed by operating expenditure caused by environmental protection, most of which consists of the operating and maintenance costs of environmental protection equipment.

Greenhouse gas emissions in 2011

In 2011, Finland's greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 67.0 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 eq.). They declined by a total of 7.5 million carbon dioxide tonnes from the year before, falling below the commitment level of the Kyoto Protocol by around six per cent. The data are based on the report delivered by Statistics Finland to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 15 April 2013 concerning emissions in 2011. Compared to the preliminary data released in December 2012, the emissions were 0.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide higher, which was mainly caused by revised figures of peat use in the energy sector.

Finnish imports of goods heavier than exports

Last year, Finland imported nearly 62 million tonnes of goods. A fifth of the weight of the imported goods was biotic, in particular agricultural and forestry products, refined wood products and food. The import volume of food (2.3 million tonnes) doubled in the past decade, and that of wood products grew even more. However, a majority of imported goods were abiotic, mainly energy minerals, oil products, chemicals, ores and metals. The single largest product groups were crude oil (11.2 million tonnes), coal, gas and iron ore.

Public sector environmental protection expenditure grew slightly

Public sector environmental protection expenditure grew between 2007 and 2009 on average 2.4 per cent per year. Public sector environmental protection expenditure totalled some EUR 1.3 billion in 2009. Slightly less than one-half, or EUR 635 million, of this expenditure was financed with revenue. The central government's share of the expenditure was 51 per cent and that of local government 49 per cent. That means the central governments share grew slightly compared to previous years. The biggest part of the public sector expenditure, that is EUR 710 million, consisted of operating expenditure.
