Mikkeli was the municipality with highest number of free-time residences in 2012

According to Statistics Finland, there were a total of 496,200 free-time residences at the end of 2012. Municipal mergers changed the order of municipalities with most free-time residences. Measured by the number of free-time residences the biggest municipalities after the municipal mergers were Mikkeli and Kuopio, while in the year before the largest number of free-time residences was found in Parainen. Mikkeli's number of free-time residences grew as a result of municipal mergers with Ristiina and Suomenniemi at the beginning of 2013. The municipal merger with Nilsiä increased the number of free-time residences in Kuopio. As a result of municipal mergers, the number of free-time residences in many towns described the number of free-time residences in the area rather than the number of free-time residences in the actual town.

In 2012, the number of families with at least four children grew by around one hundred families from the year before. The trend of the number of families with two and three children is falling and the number of families with one child has remained almost unchanged. At the end of 2012, an average of 1.83 underage children were living in families with children. The family statistics describe the size of families in Finland at a given moment and thus do not concern with the eventual number of children in families.

Income differentials in Finland still smaller than the European average

Income differentials in Finland are still smaller than the European average even though they grew relatively rapidly by international comparison in the late 1990s. In 2010, the smallest relative income differentials in Europe were found in Norway and Iceland and the largest in Latvia and Bulgaria. In Finland, the average income of the highest-income decile was 5.3-fold that of the lowest-income decile in 2010, while in the countries with the highest income differentials it was more than tenfold. These data derive from the results of the EU Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), where Finland's data are based on Statistics Finlands income distribution statistics.
