Women's total working time longer than men's

The difference between the time used by women and men on domestic work has narrowed down over the 2000s: women do less domestic work and men more. The total labour input formed by gainful employment and domestic work has diminished, because the time spent on gainful employment has fallen particularly among men. Women's total working time is now longer than men's. These data derive from Statistics Finland's Time Use Survey conducted in 2009.

According to Statistics Finland's Time Use Survey, 29 per cent of the population aged 10 or over in Finland had done voluntary work in 2009. At the level of the whole population, participation in voluntary work has remained unchanged over the past decade. However, children's and young people's participation in voluntary work has diminished considerably. Most voluntary work is done in sports and athletics clubs.

Regular reading of newspapers has diminished

Even though Finland is still a strong newspaper country, regular reading of newspapers printed on paper has decreased. Young people and young adults, in particular, read less newspapers regularly than at the start of the 1990s. In contrast, more than nine out of ten persons aged 45 or over follow newspapers regularly. These data derive from Statistics Finland's Time Use Survey conducted in 2009.

People's free time has increased in Finland

The basic characteristics of people's time use in Finland have remained quite unchanged over three decades. The clearest change is that the time spent on gainful employment has decreased due to the economic downturn. At the same time free time has increased. This is indicated by preliminary data concerning the autumn from Statistics Finland's 2009 Time Use Survey.
