Total energy consumption fell by 2 per cent in 2012

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption in 2012 amounted to around 1,367 PJ (petajoule), or 380 TW (terawatt hours), which was two per cent less than in 2011. Consumption of electricity amounted to 85.2 TWh, up by 1.1 per cent year-on-year. Consumption of energy decreased by two per cent in transport and manufacturing, but the use of heating energy of buildings increased by over six per cent. Net imports of electricity to Finland went up by nearly 26 per cent. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy diminished by close on eight per cent because six per cent less fossil fuels and 22 per cent less peat were used. The use of principally renewable energy went up by five per cent, since the energy produced with fossil fuels and peat was replaced more with imported electricity as well as with wood and domestic hydro power. According to preliminary data for 2012, renewable energy accounted for 30 per cent of total energy consumption.

Total energy consumption fell by 5 per cent in January to September

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption in the January to September period of 2012 amounted to around 989 PJ, which was five per cent less than in the corresponding period of 2011. The share of renewable energy of total energy consumption grew as the consumption of fossil fuels decreased and correspondingly, that of hydro and wind power increased. Total electricity consumption amounted to 62 TWh, which was over one per cent less than one year earlier. Electricity consumption decreased because around six per cent less electricity was used in manufacturing. However, electricity consumption started to grow in September. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy decreased by 12 per cent.

Total energy consumption fell by 5 per cent in 2011

According to Statistics Finland, total consumption of energy in Finland amounted to 1.39 million terajoules (TJ) in 2011, which was five per cent less than in 2010. Four per cent less electricity was used than in the previous year, totalling 84.2 terawatt hours (TWh). The use of renewable energy sources decreased by one per cent and that of fossil fuels by 12 per cent. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy fell by 12 per cent from 2010 and amounted to 51.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Total energy consumption decreased by 5 per cent in January to June

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, in the January to June period of 2012, total energy consumption amounted to around 705 PJ, which was five per cent less than in the corresponding period of 2011. The share of renewable energy of total energy consumption grew as the consumption of fossil fuels decreased and those of hydro and wind power, and wood fuels increased. Total electricity consumption amounted to 43.5 TWh, which was 2.4 per cent less than one year earlier. Electricity consumption decreased because nearly seven per cent less electricity was used in the forest industry. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy diminished by nearly one-fifth.

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption in the January to March period of 2012 amounted to around 418 PJ, which was three per cent less than in the corresponding period of 2011. Total electricity consumption amounted to 24.6 TWh, which was 3.3 per cent less than one year earlier. Electricity consumption diminished mainly as the consumption of electricity in the forest industry went down by over six per cent. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy fell by 21 per cent.

Total energy consumption fell by 5 per cent in 2011

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 1,386 PJ (petajoule), or 386 TWh in 2011, which was over five per cent less than in 2010. Consumption of elec-tricity amounted to 84.4 TWh, down by 3.8 per cent from the year before. Energy consumption de-creased most in manufacturing and space heating of buildings due to fallen manufacturing output and the mild weather towards the end of 2011. Net imports of electricity into Finland increased by nearly 32 per cent, partly due to the good hydropower situation in the Nordic Countries. Carbon dioxide emis-sions from the production and use of energy diminished by over 11 per cent because 11 per cent less fossil fuels and eight per cent less peat were used. The use of renewable energy fell by three per cent. According to preliminary data for 2011, renewable energy accounted for under 28 per cent of total en-ergy consumption.

Corrected on 20 October 2011 Preliminary data on energy consumption concerning the first and second quarters of 2010 and 2011 have been corrected. The corrections concern the consumption of the energy sources of natural gas, coal, peat, wood fuels and the group others. The figures regarding nuclear energy, hydro power and wind power have changed only a little. The above-mentioned changes also have an effect on the annual changes of energy use. In the following, preliminary change percentages will be reported as integers. The corrections have also changed the volume of total energy consumption. Changes in the use of fossil fuels and peat also have an impact on the energy sector's carbon dioxide emissions, the data concerning which have been corrected accordingly. Further information about the correction
