<title>Employment among students decreased slightly in 2009</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland's data, employment during studies decreased slightly in 2009 from the previous year. Still more than one-half, or 55 per cent, of students were employed during their studies. The share of students employed during studies fell by 3.5 percentage points from the previous year. Employment during studies was most widespread among university students, as 60 per cent of them had an employment contract while studying. The share of students employed during studies was 57 per cent among polytechnic students and those in upper secondary vocational education.</description>

The share of students employed during studies grew by just short of 0.5 percentage points from the previous year. The proportions of students employed during studies grew in upper secondary general, polytechnic and university education whereas among students in upper secondary vocational education the share remained on level with the previous year.</description>

Approximately 60 per cent of students attending vocational, polytechnic and university education were employed during their studies. Emplolyment increased most, or by 3.5 percentage points from the previous year, among students in vocational education. However, some studies in vocational education are completed in an employment relationship. Among polytechnic students employment increased by just short of three percentage points and among university students by just under two percentage points from the previous year. Employment also became widespread among students attending upper secondary general education.</description>

<description>Employment during studies increased most among students in vocational education. In 2005, 56 per cent of the students had an employment relationship during studies. However, a part the studies in vocational education are completed in an employment relationship. Employment of students in polytechnic education also increased from the year before, 54 per cent of the students were employed during studies. The employment of students in university education and upper secondary general education has remained level in the 2000s. Roughly 57 per cent of university students and roughly 30 per cent of students in upper secondary general education students have been employed.</description>
