<title>Finnish residents favoured trips abroad in December 2011</title>

<description>In December Finnish residents set off abroad and their trips with overnight stay in the destination country numbered close on 300,000. The destination of every fourth of these trips was the Canary Islands. Finnish residents made nearly 120,000 cruises in December. Leisure trips in Finland with paid ac-commodation remained on level with the previous year. The regions favoured in December were Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia.</description>

<description>November darkness prompted Finnish residents to travel to Estonia or the Canary Islands. Trips with overnight stays to Finnish residents' favourite destination of Estonia numbered 73,000 while 76,000 trips were made to Spain. The destination of 77 per cent of the trips to Spain was the Canary Islands. Cruises to Sweden also attracted Finnish residents in the late autumn gloom. Domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation decreased from the respective time period of the year before. The region favoured in November was Uusimaa.</description>

Southern warmth also appealed to resident tourists in October and trips to Mediterranean countries increased by 47 per cent from last year's October. The number of domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation remained on level with the previous years respective time period.</description>

<description>A great number of Finnish residents made a trip abroad to Estonia, Sweden or Mediterranean countries in September. Finnish residents made 176,000 leisure trips or cruises with overnight stays to Estonia and Sweden, which is 56 per cent more than in the corresponding period of one year ago. Finnish residents were also keen to travel to the Mediterranean to where the number of trips went up by 78 per cent from last year. Domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation went down by 11 per cent in September when compared with the respective month of the previous year.</description>

Finnish residents made 707,000 leisure trips with paid accommodation in Finland. This is 18 per cent less than in the previous year's August.</description>

Finnish residents made 446,000 leisure trips or cruises with overnight stays to our neighbouring countries, which is 26 per cent more than in the corresponding period of one year ago. France also increased its popularity in July. Finnish residents made 1,009,000 leisure trips with paid accommodation in Finland. This is six per cent less than in the previous year's July, when domestic travelling was record busy.</description>

In May Finnish residents made 444,000 leisure trips with paid accommodation in Finland. This is seven per cent less than in the previous year's May, when domestic travelling was record busy.</description>

<title>Finnish travel increased in 2010</title>

<description>In 2010, Finnish residents made nearly four million leisure trips abroad which involved staying overnight in the destination country. The number increased by 11 per cent from 2009. More leisure trips with paid accommodation were also made in Finland than in the year before and their number went up by 13 per cent to around six million. Business trips in Finland and abroad recovered to the 2008 level after the slight downturn in 2009. These data derive from Statistics Finlands Finnish Travel Survey for which 16,659 people aged 15 to 74 permanently resident in Finland were interviewed.</description>

One fifth of these trips were headed to Lapland. Cruises to Estonia were also popular and their number doubled from last year's April. The number of trips abroad with overnight stay in the destination country increased by ten per cent from the respective time period of the year before.</description>
