Income differentials continued growing in 2011

According to Statistics Finland's Total statistics on income distribution, income differentials continued growing slightly in 2011. The value of the Gini coefficient describing income differentials was 28.5, which is 0.3 percentage points more than in the previous year and 0.9 percentage points higher than in 2009. In the lowest-income decile of the population the growth of income in real terms went up by a couple of tenths of a per cent. In the highest-income decile of the population, the increase in income was 2.2 per cent. In the top-earning percentage of the population, the annual income growth was seven per cent in 2011.

Income differentials began to grow in 2010

According to Statistics Finland's Total statistics on income distribution, the contraction of income differentials that had lasted for a couple of years came to an end in 2010. In 2010, the value of the Gini coefficient describing income differentials was 28.2, which is 0.6 percentage points higher than twelve months earlier. In the lowest-earning income decile, income grew by 1.5 per cent in real terms while in the highest-earning decile income grew by nearly five per cent. In the top-earning percentage of the population, income went up by over 12 per cent. Income differentials grew especially due to increased sales profits and dividend income.

Contraction of income differentials continued in 2009

The contraction of income differentials, which started in 2008, continued through 2009. In the highest-income decile of the population, average income fell by 3 per cent but in the highest-earning percentage of the population income decreased by 15 per cent. By contrast, in other income deciles income went up in 2009. Statistics Finland's total statistics on income distribution show that in the lowest-income decile of the household-dwelling population the growth of income in real terms was only half-a-per cent whereas in the income deciles from two to nine it amounted to between 2 and 2.5 per cent.

Decrease in top incomes contracted income differentials

In 2008, the average disposable money income of households fell by 0.3 per cent in real terms from the previous year. However, measured with median income, the income grew by another 1.5 per cent as Statistics Finlands Total statistics on income distribution show. In 2008, the income differentials between different population groups also narrowed down clearly from the previous years record level. This is because the development in the income of the highest-earning population group was clearly weaker than that of other population groups.
