<title>RD expenditure in the higher education sector up by 11 per cent</title>

<description>In 2010 around EUR 185 million more was used on research and development than one year previously. According to Statistics Finland, the majority of the growth, 77 per cent, was directed to the higher education sector. EUR 115 million of the EUR 142 million increase recorded for the higher education sector came from the growth in external funding. The change in research made with basic State funding thus remained minor.</description>

<title>Downswing in business enterprises investments in RD</title>

<description>Business enterprises decreased their expenditure on research and development (RD) activities by good EUR 250 million from the previous year. Expenditure has never before gone down during the entire time period starting from 1971 over which Statistics Finland has compiled statistics on RD investments. RD expenditure decreased in several industries, but by most, or by around EUR 90 million, in the electronics industry. In 2009, business enterprises RD expenditure totalled EUR 4.85 billion.</description>

<title>Research and development expenditure EUR 6.9 billion</title>

<description>Approximately EUR 6.9 billion was expended on research and development (RD) in Finland in 2008. Business enterprises accounted for EUR 5.1 billion, the higher education sector for just under EUR 1.2 billion and the rest of the public sector for nearly EUR 600 million of this. Good EUR 600 million more RD expenditure than in the previous year was recorded in statistics. The vast majority (94%) of the growth came from the business enterprise sector, but RD expenditure also rose somewhat in the other examined sectors. In 2009 RD expenditure is estimated to remain more or less on level with 2008.</description>

<description>Total expenditure on research and development rose in Finland to good EUR 6.2 billion in 2007. The growth in real terms that exceeded five per cent was the fastest since the turn of the millennium. RD expenditure grew by over EUR 400 million in the business enterprise sector and by almost EUR 90 million even in the higher education sector. By contrast, approximately EUR 10 million less RD expenditure than in the previous year was recorded in statistics for the public sector, even though some RD activities of the local government sector were also included this time.</description>

<description>Expenditure on research and development went up in Finland by nearly EUR 300 million and totalled EUR 5.8 billion in 2006. The growth was in the region of four per cent for the fourth successive year. The business enterprise sector contributed EUR 230 million, or 80 per cent, to the growth. Both the higher education sector and the public sector also increased their RD expenditure. RD expenditure is estimated to pass the EUR 6 billion mark in 2007.</description>

<title>Research and development expenditure went up again in 2005</title>

<description>Nearly EUR 5.5 billion was expended on research and development in Finland 2005. RD expenditure grew by four per cent from 2004, or by almost the same amount as in the previous year. In terms of figures the growth amounted to EUR 220 million, of which EUR 193 million came from the enterprise sector and EUR 25 million from research institutes in the public sector. The engine behind the growth was the electronics industry where investments in RD went up by nearly seven per cent from 2004.</description>

In numbers, the biggest part of the EUR 250 million annual growth, slightly over EUR 150 million, came from business enterprises. Despite this, enterprises' share of RD expenditure fell slightly, to 70 per cent.</description>
