<description>In January 2012 a total of 20,289 new motor vehicles were registered, of which 15,864 were automobiles. First registrations increased by 0.3 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year. In January the number of new passenger cars registered was 14,263, which was 3.4 per cent up from the year before. The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 41.3 per cent. These data are based on the Vehicular and Driver Data Register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.</description>

<title>Finnish residents favoured trips abroad in December 2011</title>

<description>In December Finnish residents set off abroad and their trips with overnight stay in the destination country numbered close on 300,000. The destination of every fourth of these trips was the Canary Islands. Finnish residents made nearly 120,000 cruises in December. Leisure trips in Finland with paid ac-commodation remained on level with the previous year. The regions favoured in December were Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia.</description>

<title>Rents rose by 2.9 per cent in the year</title>

<description>During the last quarter of 2011, the year-on-year increase in rents was 2.9 per cent. The rents of non-subsidised rental dwellings went up by an average of 3.1 per cent in the whole country. In the Greater Helsinki Area the rents of non-subsidised rental dwellings went up by 3.6 per cent and in the rest of Finland by 2.8 per cent. The rents of government subsidised dwellings rose by 2.6 per cent in the whole country. Compared to the previous quarter, the rents of non-subsidised dwellings increased by an average of 1.2 per cent and the rents of government subsidised dwellings by 0.4 per cent.</description>

<title>The share of municipal tax in direct taxes has grown</title>

<description>In 2010 direct taxes and payments paid by income earners totalled EUR 25.3 billion, which was four per cent more than one year earlier. The amount of taxes on capital income grew most, by 33 per cent from the year before. In contrast, taxes paid on earned income went down by 4.6 per cent from the previous year. Municipal tax grew by 3.5 per cent and sickness insurance contributions by 23 per cent. Payments of municipal tax amounted to EUR 15.6 billion, taxes on earned income to EUR 5.1 billion and taxes on capital income to EUR 1.7 billion.</description>

In 2008, gross domestic product grew by 0.3 per cent and in 2009 it contracted by 8.4 per cent. The growth previously estimated for 2010 was 3.6 per cent. Previous estimates gave the growth for 2008 as 1.0 per cent and the contraction for 2009 as 8.2 per cent. Thus, the economic downturn was slightly deeper than previously estimated.</description>

<title>Households net financial assets in strong decline in the third quarter of 2011</title>

<description>In the third quarter of 2011, households net financial assets decreased by EUR 10.3 billion from the previous quarter. A fall of corresponding size was last seen when the financial crisis was peaking in the last quarter of 2008. There were two main underlying reasons for the decline. Households borrowing was growing steadily while at the same time share prices continued to fall. Households net financial assets, or the difference between financial assets and liabilities, amounted to EUR 87.5 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2011. These data derive from Statistics Finlands financial accounts statistics.</description>

<title>Consumption of hard coal decreased by 28 per cent in 2011</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, nearly 28 per cent less hard coal was used as fuel in power and heat production in 2011 than in the year before. Its total consumption as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat amounted to 4.2 million tonnes, corresponding to 106 petajoules in energy content. In the last quarter of the year, consumption of hard coal amounted to around 0.9 million tonnes, which was 54 per cent less than one year earlier. Use of hard coal decreased in plants of separate production of electricity, which consumed 47 less of it than a year earlier in 2010.</description>

<description>In the first round of the Presidential election, the two candidates who received the highest numbers of votes were Sauli Niinistö and Pekka Haavisto. Sauli Niinistö, the candidate of the National Coalition Party received 1,131,254 votes, thus winning the first round with 37.0 per cent of all votes cast. Pekka Haavisto, the candidate of the Green League was second in the first round of the Presidential election with 18.8 per cent of all votes cast. He gained 574,275 votes. The difference between the two candidates with most votes cast was 556,979 votes and 18.2 percentage points.</description>

<title>Debts grew more than income in 2010</title>

<description>During a decade, household-dwelling units debts have gone up by clearly more than their income. In 2010, household-dwelling units with debt rate of indebtedness, i.e. ratio of debts to disposable income, was 156 per cent, having been 108 per cent in 2002. In 2009, the rate of indebtedness was 153 per cent. Outstanding debts of household-dwelling units with debt grew by 4.9 per cent and their disposable monetary income by 2.6 per cent in 2010. Except for the youngest ones, household-dwelling units rate of indebtedness rose from the previous year in all age groups.</description>
