Description

Economic Accounts for Agriculture (EAA) are published for the first time in Finland for the statistical reference year 2019. Economic Accounts for Agriculture are produced in connection with National Accounts and they can be considered one satellite account of the national accounts. Satellite accounts refer to a description of the national accounts that is compiled in more detail or in a different manner than the general system of National Accounts. Finland has delivered economic accounts for agriculture data to Eurostat ever since Finland joined the EU. Compilation of Economic Accounts for Agriculture is based on Regulation (EC) No 134/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council. There is a uniform methodological description and manual (Manual on the Economic Accounts for Agriculture and Forestry) for the compilation of EU’s Economic Accounts for Agriculture. The source data used in Finland for Economic Accounts for Agriculture are primarily the data of statistics belonging to the system of Official Statistics of Finland, OSF.

Data content

The Economic Accounts for Agriculture statistics describe output, use of means of production, value added, subsidies by product, gross fixed capital formation by type of commodity, capital transfers, operating surplus and entrepreneurial income in agriculture. The data have been calculated and summed for the whole country.

Classifications used

Transactions are classified according to the headings of production, sources of income, entrepreneurial income and capital accounts described in the Manual on the Economic Accounts for Agriculture and Forestry. Detailed product and intermediate product classifications can also be found in Statistics Finland’s Classification Database.

Data collection methods and data sources

Economic Accounts for Agriculture are derived statistics, where several different statistical data compiled by Statistics Finland and other producers are used. Statistics produced by Statistics Finland include the statistics on the finances of agricultural and forestry enterprises, the Labour Force Survey and price indices, to mention a few. Statistics produced by the Natural Resources Institute Finland used as source data include, for example, crop production and other production statistics, as well as price statistics. The data are edited to correspond with the general concepts and definitions of national accounts.

In addition to the above mentioned data, data for some products are asked from the producer organisations of the product in question and from units responsible for trade and other experts.

Updating frequency

The data for Economic Accounts for Agriculture are released once a year in Finland but Eurostat’s data are updated and delivered three times per year.

Time of completion or release

The preliminary data of the Economic Accounts for Agriculture for the statistical reference year are available already before the end of the statistical reference year in December. Revised data for previous years are released in this same connection.

Time series

In the Economic Accounts for Agriculture release at hand, data are presented starting from 2010 but corresponding data concerning Finland is available in Eurostat’s database starting from 1975.
