Working for Statistics Finland
From undergraduate trainee to the management level
Leena Storgårds works as Director of Statistics Finland's Economic and Environmental Statistics. The Department produces statistics on, e.g. manufacturing, technology, the environment and energy. It employs about 130 experts.
Leena started her career at Statistics Finland as undergraduate trainee in the 1990s. Since then she has worked in a variety of expert tasks both at Statistics Finland and elsewhere in state administration.
"My diversified background and versatile job history have widened my knowledge about the production of statistics and the factors affecting it."
A researcher's career becomes networked
Researcher Riitta Hanifi's work centres on Statistics Finland's Time Use Survey. The Time Use Survey is an extensive interview survey for which the respondents keep a detailed diary of their time use during two days.
"The data are collected by Statistics Finland's interview organisation. My tasks are to guide the interviewers and research assistants, and monitor the quality of the work."
Research at Statistics Finland is strongly based on international co-operation, because the results must be comparable throughout the EU area. It also involves close co-operation with universities and various research institutes.
Entering supervisor's career as young expert
Head of Research Faiz Alsuhail works as supervisor of Statistics Finland's Statistical Research and Methods Unit.
Faiz started to work at Statistics Finland as undergraduate trainee already towards the end of his studies. After his traineeship he was employed in various experts' tasks, e.g. as researcher. In 2010, Faiz was made supervisor of the Unit and also graduated from the university with a licentiate's degree.
"Despite my young age I have been allowed to participate in many interesting development projects and international assignments. Statistics Finland encouraged me to improve my competence."
