Number of students and degrees in polytechnics decreased slightly in 2006

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 132,600 students attended polytechnic education leading to a degree in autumn 2006. This was 200 students fewer than in 2005. The number of new students was 36,300, which is 2 per cent less than one year previously. A total of 21,000 degrees were obtained at polytechnics in 2006. The number of degrees went down by two per cent.

The number of foreign students attending education leading to a degree was 4,600, which is 16 per cent more than one year previously. Examined by continent, the highest number of foreign students came from the Asian countries, Africa and the EU and EEC countries. In 2006 the number of degrees obtained by foreign students went down by 15 per cent from the previous year and stood at slightly below 500.

The number of students attending education leading to a higher polytechnic degree was 2,100 in 2006, which is 1,000 students more than in 2005. Higher polytechnic degrees were obtained by 150 students, of whom 77 per cent were women.

As from autumn 2005, it has been possible to obtain higher polytechnic degrees, which replaced the earlier post-graduate polytechnic degrees, in all fields of education.
