Enterprise openings began to show growth

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings increased by two per cent in the fourth quarter of 2016 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa. In the third quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was up by 9.1 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,987 enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2016. Enterprise openings increased by two per cent from the fourth quarter of 2015, when they numbered 5,871. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 969, or 16.2 per cent of all enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2016. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 916 (15.3%) and in construction 735 (12.3%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise openings decreased most in professional, scientific and technical activities (65).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the fourth quarter of 2016 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,386. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (530) and in Pirkanmaa (516). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.0%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Ostrobothnia (41) and decreased most in South Karelia (-11).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,249), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (416) and Turku (358). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Ålands skärgård sub-regional unit (2,5%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Porvoo (38) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Tampere (-39).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2016 in Helsinki (1,272), followed by Espoo (330), Tampere (280), Vantaa (252) and Turku (231). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, enterprise openings increased most in Porvoo (36) and decreased most in Vantaa (-28).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2016, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 2,614 and those of the form of limited company 2,892. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 43.7 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 48.3 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 3rd quarter 2016

According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,239 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2016. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 9.1 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2015 they numbered 4,803. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2016.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,038, or 19.8 per cent of all enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2016. In professional, scientific and technical activities, enterprise closures numbered 778 (14.9%) and in construction 766 (14.6%). Compared to the third quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise closures increased most in trade (127).

Examined by region, in the third quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (1,950). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (468) and in Pirkanmaa (466). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (1.7%). Compared to the third quarter of 2015, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (177) and decreased most in Kymenlaakso (–18).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,833), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (372) and Turku (307). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional units of Forssa (1.9%). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsingfors (153) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Kouvola (-19).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2016 in Helsinki (1,011), followed by Espoo (262), Tampere (217), Vantaa (197) and Turku (172). Compared to the third quarter of 2015, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (114) and decreased most in Kouvola (-18).

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2016, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,542 and those of the form of limited company 1,855. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 48.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 35.4 per cent of all enterprise closures.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.
