Number of enterprise openings grew by 15 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings rose by 15 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019 from the respective quarter of 2018. In the third quarter of 2019, the number of enterprise closures was nine per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of the year before.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 9,029 enterprise openings in October to December 2019. There were 1,174 or 15 per cent more enterprise openings than in the corresponding period of 2018.

Examined by main industry, most enterprise openings were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities. The number of enterprise openings in this industry was 1,563. The second most enterprise openings occurred in trade (1,080) and the third most in construction (1,049). Altogether 40 per cent of all enterprise openings were in these three industries. In addition to the previously mentioned industries, there were also over one hundred more enterprise openings in the industries of human health and social work activities and other service activities than in the last quarter of 2018.

Examined by region, most enterprise openings were recorded in Uusimaa, 3,785 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (775), Southwest Finland (755) and North Ostrobothnia (525). Compared to one year ago, the increase was highest in numbers in Uusimaa (+603). In the other regions the increase varied from a few enterprises to 77, except in North Savo, where the number of enterprise openings decreased slightly (-16). Measured in percentages, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Kymenlaakso (+35%) and Central Ostrobothnia (+33%) from one year ago.

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 3,610 enterprises. There were 648 enterprise openings in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 574 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of enterprise openings grew by around 590 from one year back, in the sub-regional unit of Tampere by around 90 and in the sub-regional unit of Turku by around 60. Compared to the year before, the number of enterprise openings decreased in around every fourth sub-regional unit.

Examined by municipality, the highest number of enterprise openings in the last quarter of 2019 was recorded in Helsinki, 1,855 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Espoo (630), Vantaa (471), Tampere (408) and Turku (382). In Greater Helsinki (incl. Kauniainen) the number of enterprise openings increased by 20 per cent, in Tampere by 18 per cent and in Turku by 13 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the year before.

Examined by legal form, in the last quarter of 2019, enterprise openings in the form of natural persons numbered 4,510 and those in the form of limited companies 4,136. Enterprise openings in the form of natural persons accounted for 50 per cent and those in the form of limited companies for 46 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 3rd quarter of 2019

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,156 enterprise closures in July to September 2019. There were 355 or nine per cent more enterprise closures than in the corresponding period of 2018.

Examined by main industry, the highest number of enterprise closures was recorded in trade (732). The next highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities (567) and construction (525). The number of enterprise closures rose clearly most in the industry of other service activities, which had around 70 more enterprise closures than in the corresponding period of the year before.

Examined by region, most enterprise closures were recorded in Uusimaa, 1,537 enterprises. The next highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in Pirkanmaa (394) and Southwest Finland (375). Altogether more than one-half (55%) of all enterprise closures occurred in these three regions. Compared to the third quarter of 2018, the number of enterprise closures increased most in relative terms in North Karelia (+46%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest number of enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2019 was recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 1,463 enterprises. There were 322 enterprise closures in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 259 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of enterprise closures grew by 170 from one year back, in the sub-regional unit of Tampere by 59 and in the sub-regional unit of Turku by 24. There were 69 enterprise closures in the sub-regional unit of Joensuu, which was an increase of 23 enterprises, i.e. the fourth highest number, from one year back.

Examined by municipality, the highest number of enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2019 was recorded in Helsinki, 729 enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Espoo (235), Tampere (188), Vantaa (171) and Turku (161). In Greater Helsinki (incl. Kauniainen) the number of enterprise closures increased by 10 per cent, in Tampere by 21 per cent and in Turku by 14 per cent from one year back.

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2019, enterprise closures in the form of natural persons numbered 2,092 and those in the form of limited companies 1,630. Enterprise closures in the form of natural persons accounted for 50 per cent and those in the form of limited companies for 39 per cent of all enterprise closures.
