Retail trade sales went down by 0.7 per cent year-on-year in December

According to Statistics Finland, sales in total trade increased by 2.1 per cent in December from December 2015. Among the sectors of trade, motor vehicle trade grew most, by 4.5 per cent. Over the same period, wholesale trade sales increased by 3.4 per cent. By contrast, sales in retail trade fell by 0.7 per cent in December from the previous year. Among retail trade industries, daily consumer goods sales grew by 0.2 per cent, whereas sales in department stores contracted by 2.8 per cent.

Sales volume of total trade nearly at the same level as in the previous year in December

The volume of retail trade sales decreased by 0.7 per cent in December from December 2015 and thus decreased as much as turnover in the industry. In wholesale trade, the sales volume contracted by 0.3 per cent year-on-year. The sales volume in motor vehicle trade, in turn, increased by 4.4 per cent from the year before. Thus, sales volume decreased in total trade by 0.1 per cent compared with December 2015.

The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

Sales in total trade increased by 1.4 per cent in January to December from January to December 2015. In the corresponding period, motor vehicle sales went up by 8.9 per cent and retail trade sales by 0.7 per cent. Sales in wholesale trade were on level with 2015 in January to December

The reported annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are not seasonally or trading day adjusted, which means that the effects of public holidays are not considered. The opening hours of retail shops were deregulated starting from 1 January 2016 after which some retail shops have extended their opening hours.
