The web statistics service WebStat of the Library of Statistics is closed. The closing day on the Internet was 1 November 2010. The service started 11 years ago.
The WebStat service included a wide range of high-quality statistical information free of charge. Statistical tables, databases and portals, as well as Finnish, foreign and international sources always remained equally reliable, regardless of the mode used. The information specialists of the Library of Statistics answered for the selection, description and saving of information and it was all done manually by experienced experts with strict criteria. The early 2000s were the golden age of various directories and the WebStat was among the best of them, also receiving international attention.
Unique human-edited work on metadata appears to be slow, expensive and laborious in the world of Google and social media. The National Science Consortium was closed down, the WebStat technology became outdated, and the web products and services of Statistics Finland began to be modernised. So in 2008 Statistics Finland opened a portal for Finnish official statistics and one year later an international statistical data portal. The information specialists of the Library of Statistics have been involved in both projects.
