The national accounts are a statistical system that is used primarily - not only, but primarily - to calculate the gross domestic product or GDP. This lesson provides a general overview of the national accounts system: how the system is made up, what it describes and what it is used for. Concepts and their definitions are particularly important to the national accounts system and therefore this is where we shall start: in any comparison it is important to know what is included and what is not.
