From a study into a story - statistical poster competition for young people

Finnish schools are challenged to take part in the international statistical poster competition. The theme of the competition is history: students work in groups to make a small-scale study on their country's history and present the results in a statistical poster.

The aim of the statistical poster competition, which is intended for secondary and upper secondary school students, is to improve the abilities of young people in describing their environment with the help of statistics and in using statistics in their everyday life. The competition is now arranged for the fifth time. This time, Finland's national competition also marks the centenary of Finland’s independence.

Finland’s best statistical posters will compete in the international final

The competition has two categories: secondary and upper secondary school students. The best statistical poster in each category from every participating school qualifies to the national final. The best Finnish statistical posters will continue to the international final. Last time, 8,026 students from 22 counties participated in the international competition.

Students are registered into the competition through their teachers. The competition language is English or the native language of the participants. Participation does not cost anything.

The competition is organised by the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP) of the International Association of Statistical Education (IASE), which promotes the teaching of statistics and statistical literacy, and operates under the auspices of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). In Finland, the competition organisers are Statistics Finland, the Finnish Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics (MAOL) and the Finnish Statistical Society.

Phases of the competition

  1. Students can register into the competition through their teacher via the website of the ISLP. Registration began on 18 January 2016.
