Total output increased in April

Total output grew by 0.7 per cent in the year to April. After adjustment for seasonal variation, output in April was up by 0.2 per cent from March. In March output decreased by 1.2 per cent on the preceding year. This appears from Statistics Finland's monthly indicator of total output.

In the year to April, output increased in all branches of industry with the exception of agriculture and forestry, where output fell by over 20 per cent. This was due mainly to the almost 35 per cent decrease in commercial fellings.

The greatest increase in output occurred in construction, by five and a half per cent. In transport and communications, output grew by just under five per cent from April 1995 and that in the wholesale and retail trade by a good four per cent. Output in other services and government services increased by two per cent and in manufacturing by just under one per cent.

The monthly indicator of total output is based on eleven monthly series on different sectors of the economy, which are weighted and summed up.
