Vessels in the regular merchant fleet numbered 671 in March 2022

In March 2022, the size of the Finnish merchant fleet was 1,237 vessels. The regular merchant fleet included 671 vessels and the number of small vessels was 281. The number of barges and other engineless vessels was 285 in total. The gross tonnage of the entire registered merchant fleet was 1,873,185. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands merchant fleet statistics.

  • The Register of Merchant Vessels, in which vessels operating mainly in foreign traffic can be entered, contained a total of 107 vessels in March 2022.
  • Of the gross tonnage of the entire registered merchant fleet, the gross tonnage of the regular merchant fleet accounted for 94 per cent and vessels entered in the Register of Merchant Vessels for 85 per cent.

The gross tonnage of ro-ro ships was more than half of the tonnage of the entire regular merchant fleet

Most of the vessels in the regular merchant fleet were passenger ships. The biggest category by gross tonnage was ro-ro passenger ships. The gross tonnage of ro-ro passenger ships and ro-ro cargo ships was more than half of the tonnage of the entire regular merchant fleet. Ro-ro ships are vessels where cargo is loaded and unloaded by moving it on wheels onto and off the ship on ramps in the stern and bow or through side doors (roll on/roll off).

The majority of vessels entered in the Register of Merchant Vessels were other dry cargo ships, ro-ro cargo ships and special purpose ships. The gross tonnage of ro-ro passenger ships and ro-ro cargo ships made up two-thirds of the volume of the entire Register of Merchant Vessels.

The size of the regular merchant fleet has grown during 2022

The number of vessels in the regular merchant fleet had increased by two compared to the situation at the turn of the previous year. The number of passenger ships and other dry cargo ships increased by one each. The number of vessels in the Register of Merchant Vessels had increased by one compared to the situation at the turn of the previous year.
