Employment rate of mothers rose in 2021

According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, the employment rate of people aged 20 to 59 remained at the same level in 2021 compared to 2019. In contrast, the employment rate of mothers rose by 2.6 percentage points during this period.

For those aged 20 to 59, there were no major changes in the employment rate in 2021 compared to 2019. However, the employment rate was slightly lower in 2020 than in these years due to the corona pandemic. Men's employment rate remained almost unchanged, except for the fall in 2020 and women's employment rate rose slightly from 2019 to 2021. Over the period, the employment rate among mothers of families with underage children rose from 76.3 to 78.9 per cent. The employment rate went up especially among mothers whose youngest child was aged under three.

Compared to 2019, the employment rate rose in 2021 by 4.5 percentage points for mothers with three or more children and by 2.0 percentage points for mothers with one or two children.
