Value of energy imports grew by 116 per cent in January to September 2022
release | Energy supply and consumption 2022, 3rd quarterAccording to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, diverse energy products were imported to Finland to the value of EUR 14 billion in January to September 2022, which was 116 per cent more than one year earlier. The growth was affected by higher import prices of energy commodities. By contrast, the import volumes of energy commodities both rose and fell. The import volume of crude oil increased by 32 per cent from the previous year. The import volume of electricity decreased by 17 per cent and that of natural gas by 48 per cent from the year before. Russia's share of the value of imports of energy products continued declining in the third quarter of 2022.

- Based on value, imports of crude oil (incl. natural gas condensate) were biggest among energy products, as they were imported to the value of EUR 5.4 billion in January to September 2022. Imports of crude oil totalled 7.5 million tonnes, or 32 per cent more than in the year before.
- In January to September 2022, imports of electricity amounted to 15 TWh, or 17 per cent less than in the year before, even though the value of imports rose by 109 per cent. Electricity exports totalled 5.3 TWh, which was seven per cent more than in the year before. Imports of electricity from Russia ended in May 2022.
- Altogether 1.4 million tonnes of hard coal were imported in January to September 2022, which was 73 per cent more than in the year before.
- In January to September 2022, the volume of natural gas imports fell by 48 per cent from the previous year, even though the value of natural gas imports rose by 140 per cent. Imports of pipeline gas from Russia ceased in May 2022.
- In January to September, the value of energy exports amounted to EUR 5.8 billion, which was 100 per cent more than one year previously. Motor gasoline (EUR 2.3 billion) and medium distillates (EUR 1.7 billion) were exported most.
