Altogether 225 persons died in road traffic accidents in 2021

According to Statistics Finland, 3,243 road traffic accidents involving personal injury occurred in 2021. In them, 225 persons were killed and 3,886 injured. Nine per cent of the injured, or 368 persons, were injured seriously. In 2021, the number of deaths was two higher and that of injured persons 525 fewer than in 2020. There were 28 deaths on motorcycles in which tuned mopeds are also included, that is 40 per cent more than a year earlier.

  • The number of fatal accidents in 2021 remained unchanged (208), most of them swerving accidents and head-on collisions. The number of accidents leading to injury continued to decline (3,035).
  • Seventy-five per cent of those having died in road traffic accidents and 59 per cent of injured were men. Almost the same number of men died in 2021 as a year earlier (169), but there were 10 per cent more deaths among women (56).

Number of people killed in road traffic accidents increased

Viewed by age group, the highest number of deaths in road traffic accidents in 2021 was in the over 75 age group, who have taken the top spot from 15 to 24 age group.

The number of people seriously injured in accidents reported to the police declined almost in all age groups. Only in the 45 to 54 age group more serious injuries occurred than in 2020.

In 2021, altogether 28 suicides were committed in road traffic by collisions with a motor vehicle, which is 33 per cent more than in the year before. The share of suicides in road traffic fatalities was around 12 per cent.
