Altogether 269 bankruptcies were instigated in October 2023

According to Statistics Finland, 269 bankruptcy proceedings were instigated in October 2023, which is 53 more than in the corresponding period one year earlier. The number of staff-years in enterprises that filed for bankruptcy totalled 1,164, which is 300 staff-years more than in October 2022.

The number of bankruptcies has exceeded 3,000 enterprises that filed for bankruptcy in 2009, 2014 and 2023. In 2020 to 2021, there were temporarily fewer than 2,000 bankruptcies per year. Otherwise, the number of enterprises that filed for bankruptcy has been between 2,200 and 2,600 annually.

  • During the past 12 months, the number of bankruptcies was 20 per cent higher than in the 12 months preceding this period.
  • In October 2023, most bankruptcy proceedings were instigated in the industries of construction and other service activities. In the industry of other service activities, 89 bankruptcy proceedings were instigated, and in construction 64 bankruptcies.
