Turnover in service industries grew by 13.6 per cent and volume by 5.8 per cent in January 2023

According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 13.6 per cent in January 2023 from January 2022. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 5.8 per cent over the same period. In December 2022, turnover grew of 10.2 per cent and volume correspondingly rose by 4.4 per cent. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

Turnover growing in main service industries

Among the main service industries, turnover grew most in accommodation and food service activities in January 2023. Working day adjusted turnover in the industry rose by 61,0 per cent from January one year ago while volume grew by 47.4 per cent over the same period. In transportation and storage, working day adjusted turnover grew by 15.3 per cent from January 2022 and volume was falling by 4.0 per cent over the same period. The volume development of transport and storage is influenced by a sharp upturn in prices in the industry during 2022.

Administrative and support service activities grew at almost the same pace as the entire service industry. Turnover adjusted for working days in the industry rose by 13.8 per cent from January 2022, while volume went up by 5.9 per cent over the same period.

In January 2023, working day adjusted turnover in other service activities increased by 11.0 per cent from the year before. In information and communication activities, and arts, entertainment and recreation, working day adjusted turnover grew by 9.8 per cent from January 2022. The volume of information and communication activities went up by 6.4 per cent over the corresponding period.

The working day adjusted turnover of real estate activities rose by 9.1 per cent and volume by 6.4 per cent from January 2022. Professional, scientific and technical activities developed most moderately in other service industries. In January 2023, working day adjusted turnover in the industry grew by 7.7 per cent and volume by 5.7 per cent from the previous year’s January.

Turnover and output grew from the previous month

Seasonally adjusted turnover in service industries rose by 2.3 per cent in January 2023 compared to December 2022. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, rose by 1.1 per cent over the same period. In December 2022, turnover grew by 1.1 per cent from October. Over the same period, volume grew by 1.7 per cent.
