The city of Joensuu, founded by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia in 1848, is the centre and the capital of the Region North Karelia. Over the past few decades the small agrarian town has developed into a vital centre of the Province of Eastern Finland and now has a population of 53,000.
In twenty-five years, the University of Joensuu has expanded to include five faculties. Its diversified international co-operation in science, industry and commerce benefits the whole region.

Finland is easily accessible from all over the world. Joensuu is located 440 kilometres to the north-east of Finland's capital, Helsinki. Travel connections between Helsinki and Joensuu are both frequent and reliable. Several international airlines have regular flights to Helsinki, from where Joensuu can be easily reached by air, train or coach. By air Joensuu is about one hour away from Helsinki and by train or coach the journey takes about five hours.
