Production of heat
Description of the data collection
Data on production of heat by types of technologies, fuels consumed in production and on heat sold or use of heat in the plant sites are collected for the statistics on production of electricity and heat. The reference period of the data collection is a calendar year.
The compilation of statistics on production of electricity and heat is based on the EU's Regulation on energy statistics (Regulation No 1099/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council on energy statistics), where the annual and short-term reporting requirements are described.
Statistics Finland collects data concerning separate heat production. Data collection for combined heat and power production is conducted by the Finnish Energy Industries (co-operation agreement).
The data collection is started yearly in March. The deadline for data collection is in April.
From whom are data collected?
The inquiry concerns all producers of electricity and those producers of heat whose annual production totals 10,000 megawatt hours (MWh) or whose heat production capacity is at least 5 megawatts (MW).
The production and fuel data for all producers of electricity is derived from the collection of data for the electricity statistics by the Finnish Energy Industries.
As concerns Statistics Finland's direct data collection, the obligation to provide data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004, Section 14).
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data confidential and use them only for statistical purposes.
What are the data used for?
The data are used in compilation of statistics on production of electricity and heat, monitoring and analysing the production structure of electricity and heat and used fuels. The data are also utilised in the greenhouse gas inventory, Statistics Finland's Energy online service and international reporting (EU, IEA, UN).
The data are also used in reporting relating to the Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU).
The new name of the inquiry is Production of heat (previously Production of electricity and heat) because the data on electricity production and combined heat and power production are obtained from the Finnish Energy Industries' inquiry. The name of the statistics remains unchanged Production of electricity and heat.
Changes have been made to Statistics Finland's fuel classification from 1 January 2015.The aim is to gain more reliable data on use of renewable energy and especially of wood fuels on the national level.
