General information about the data collection
Environmental protection expenditure in industry consist of the enterprise's activities directed at environmental protection, with the purpose of preventing, reducing or remedying environmental damages, improving the level of future environment protection and promoting sustainable use of natural resources. Environmental expenses are caused, for example, by waste treatment and prevention of waste being generated, protection of soil, surface water and groundwater, ambient air and climate, noise protection, and protection of biodiversity and landscape.
The inquiry starts in September and it has an electronic response service. Statistics Finland treats the data as confidential and they are used only for statistical purposes.
It is important for enterprises to take part in the inquiry as thus an enterprise can compare and receive reliable information about the enterprise's share of the expenditure directed to the environment by industry, for example. By taking part, the enterprise may have an effect on monitoring and analysing the development of environmental protection expenditure in industry both in the business life and public administration.
Legislation
The inquiry is based on Regulation (EU) No 538/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation (EU) No 691/2011 on European environmental economic accounts. Enterprises' obligation to provide data is based on the Finnish Statistics Act.
