Retail trade sales grew by 3.3 per cent year-on-year in September

According to Statistics Finland, sales in total trade increased by 2.2 per cent in September from September 2015. Growth in sales was strongest in motor vehicle trade where it amounted to 10.3 per cent. Sales in retail trade increased by 3.3 per cent in September from one year ago. Sales of daily consumer goods grew by 3.0 per cent and sales in department stores by 4.2 per cent. Of trade industries, only wholesale trade sales declined, down by 0.4 per cent in September from one year earlier.

Sales volume grew in total trade by 2.4 per cent in September from the year before

The sales volume in motor vehicle trade increased by 10.0 per cent from September 2015. Statistics Finland's data indicate that the number of first registrations of motor vehicles was also 13.3 per cent higher in Septermber than one year earlier. The sales volume in retail trade increased by 4.1 per cent. The sales volume in wholesale trade, in turn, went down by 0.5 per cent from one year back. Thus, sales volume increased in total trade by 2.4 per cent in September.

The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

Sales in retail trade grew by 0.8 per cent in January to September

Sales in total trade increased by 0.7 per cent in January to September from January to September 2015. In the corresponding period, motor vehicle sales went up by 9.8 per cent and retail trade sales by 0.8 per cent from one year previously. In turn, sales in wholesale trade decreased by 1.4 per cent in January to September from January to September 2015.

The reported annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are not seasonally or trading day adjusted, which means that the effects of public holidays are not considered. The opening hours of retail shops were deregulated starting from 1 January 2016 after which some retail shops have extended their opening hours.
