Research and development expenditure decreases particularly in business enterprises

According to Statistics Finland, research and development expenditure amounted to EUR 6.68 billion in 2013. Expenditure went down by EUR 148 million from the year before. Business enterprises' investments in product development decreased by EUR 93 million. In the electronics industry, R&D expenditure went down by EUR 114 billion. However, expenditure increased by over EUR 40 mi1lion in the industries of computer programming, consultancy and related activities, as well as research and development. R&D expenditure declined by EUR 37 million in the university sector and by EUR 19 million in the rest of the public sector.

The GDP share of research and development expenditure was 3.3 per cent in 2013. In 2014, R&D expenditure is estimated to fall by around EUR 300 million to EUR 6.38 billion and the GDP share will stand at 3.1 per cent.

The R&D expenditure of nanotechnology, which was included in the statistics for the first time, amounted to EUR 18 million in the business enterprise sector. Manufacturing accounted for 71 per cent of this and the industry of research and development for 24 per cent.
