Finland's preliminary population figure 5,422,950 at the end of October

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of October was 5,422,950. Over the January to October period, Finland's population increased by 21,700 persons, which is 800 lower than in the respective period of one year previously. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 14,250 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 7,450 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for the January to October period, 26,150 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 11,900 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,100 higher and the number of emigrants 950 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 6,750 of the immigrants and 8,300 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to October period, 50,250 children were born, which is 300 children less than in the corresponding period of 2011. The number of deaths was 42,850, which is 650 higher than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 240,250 over the January to October period. Compared with the previous January to October period, the decrease was 1,300 migrations according to the municipal division of 2012.
