Finland's preliminary population figure 5,448,025 at the end of October

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of October was 5,448,025. Over the January to October period, Finland's population increased by 21,350 persons, which is 600 persons less than in the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 14,750 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 6,600 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for the January to October period, 26,200 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 11,450 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 500 lower and the number of emigrants was 600 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 6,800 of the immigrants and 8,250 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to October period 49,400 children were born, which is 850 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 42,800, which is 100 lower than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 228,350 over the January to October period. Compared with the previous January to October period, the decrease was 8,950 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
