Finland’s preliminary population figure 5,460,459 at the end of June

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of March was 5,460,459. Over the January to June period, Finland's population increased by 9,190 persons, which is 1,620 less than in the respective period of one year previously. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 6,720 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 2,470 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for January to June period, 12,970 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 6,250 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,450 lower and the number of emigrants 210 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 3,750 of the immigrants and 4,020 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to June period, 28,490 children were born, which is 500 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths decreased by 550 from the year before and amounted to 26,010.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 117,070 by the end of June. Compared with the previous January to June period, the decrease was 1,760 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.

According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in the following regions in January to June of this year: Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Central Ostrobothnia, Åland, Kanta-Häme, Southern Ostrobothnia and Päijät-Häme.

In the January to June period, the population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it went up by 10,230 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 800 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Åland, 7.1 per mil, and in Uusimaa, 6.4 per mil. Relative population growth was third largest in Central Ostrobothnia, 3,7 per mil. Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Lapland that lost 740 persons of its population. The population of Etelä-Savo decreased by 510 persons, which was the second biggest population loss. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Lapland, 4.1 per mil and the second largest in Etelä-Savo, 3.4 per mil.

Most migration gain from total net migration (consisting of intramunicipal and international migration) was collected by Uusimaa, 7,030 persons and Pirkanmaa, 570 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms was attained by Åland, 6.3 per mil, and by Uusimaa, 4.4 per mil.

In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the regions of Lapland, 630 persons, and Central Finland, 500 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was also found in the region of Lapland, 3.5 per mil of the population.

During January to June, migration between regions numbered 52,300. The highest gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Päijät-Häme, Southern Ostrobothnia, Åland, Kanta-Häme and Central Ostrobothnia. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 3,700 persons and Pirkanmaa, 270 persons. The relative migration gain was highest in Uusimaa, 2.3 per mil, and in Åland, 2.2 per mil of the population.

Migration loss from migration between regions was largest in absolute numbers and in relative terms in Lapland, 760 persons and 4.2 per mil of the population.
