The collection of the data is based on the European Union’s Regulation (295/2008) on structural business statistics and on the Finnish Statistics Act (208/2004). The regional inquiry of trade is also made in other Member States of the European Union besides Finland. The survey is conducted at periodic intervals of five years. The collected data will be used for the compilation of statistics and reported to Eurostat. The purpose of the inquiry is to collect data on the sales floor areas and turnover of retail trade units. The inquiry is targeted at enterprises and estab-lishments operating in the industry of retail trade. The data on the sales floor areas are collected from enterprises and establishments direct because there are no suitable administrative or other data. The data on turnover are obtained from Statistics Finland’s own Business Register. The inquiry is made at five-year intervals and the next inquiry will be conducted in autumn 2015 concerning the statistical year 2014.
The basic data for the enterprises are derived from Statistics Finland’s Business Register. The sample is formed of the largest enterprises in the industry plus enterprises drawn by random selection. The sample consists of around 2600 enterprises. The obtained data are methodologically inflated to represent the whole industry 47 Retail trade.
The supplied data are treated as confidential. The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to keep data on individual enterprises and establishments un-disclosed. The data will be used for statistical and research purposes only and will be published so that data on individual enterprises cannot be identified. Data concerning an individual enterprise or establishment will not be released to third parties or even to other authorities.
