General information about the data collection
Description of the data collection
The sales inquiry asks enterprises in manufacturing and service industries (incl. trade) for monthly sales data corresponding to turnover data as defined in the Accounting Act broken down between domestic sales and sales abroad.
Construction enterprises are asked about monthly level sales data on main contract type of activity and sub-contracting in Finland and own use of construction services.
In connection with the sales inquiry, quarterly data are collected on increases and decreases of fixed assets in Finland.
Council Regulation (EC) No 1165/98 concerning short-term statistics obliges Statistics Finland to produce statistics describing short-term economic cycles on the volumes of industrial output and the wages and salaries sum, for example. The data on fixed assets are required in order to comply with the Regulation of the European Union (EC 1161/2005).
The sales data are collected monthly and the deadline for submitting the data is the 15th day of the month following the statistical reference month. The deadline for data on fixed assets is the 15th day of the month following the complete quarter.
From whom are data collected
The sales inquiry covers around 2,000 and the inquiry on fixed assets some 1,800 most important enterprises in their respective industries. In addition, data on the wages and salaries sum are inquired from enterprises divided into kind-of-activity units, because they are not available from other sources.
The inclusion criterion for the sample is the size of the enterprise’s turnover relative to the turnover of the respective industry. In addition, the most significant construction projects are included in the inquiry on fixed assets for a fixed period, in case they are not included in the sample based on the enterprise's turnover.
The sample of the inquiry on sales and fixed assets is updated monthly due to enterprise reorganisations. A larger sample updating is carried out yearly.
The obligation of enterprises to provide data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004), according to which Statistics Finland is entitled to receive the data free of charge.
Confidentiality of data
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential. Statistics Finland may only release data for scientific research or statistical surveys concerning social conditions in a form from which all information by which an individual enterprise could be identified has been removed. Data on an individual enterprise will not be released to other authorities or parties. The data are reported as industry-specific index figures in the published statistics.
What are the data used for
The data collected in the sales inquiry are used to produce statistics describing the trends of turnover and the wages and salaries sum that are needed, e.g. for national decision-making and by interest groups. In addition, the data are used for producing statistics on the tailored trend indicator service.
