Media statistics

The work on media statistics was started at Statistics Finland at the end of the 1970s. The statistical publication Finnish Mass Media was launched towards the end of the 1980s. Nowadays Finnish Mass Media is issued every two years, on even years. Other statistical reports and special surveys on the media are published regularly. The compilation of media statistics makes use of Statistics Finland's own material and registers, such as the Business Register and the Household Budget Survey. Statistics and material from several other sources are equally important.

Media statistics are produced in co-operation between the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Education and Statistics Finland.

Joukkoviestimet - Finnish Mass Media 2002. Culture and the Media 2002:3.

Finnish Mass Media is a comprehensive review of the Finnish mass media system published every second year. It classes the mass media into the following groups: the economy and consumption, television, radio, recordings, video, film, books and libraries, newspapers and magazines, digital media, public support to the media and international comparison data. An exhaustive statistical section and a review of recent development are given on each mass media sector. The tables in the publication are in Finnish and English and it contains an introduction in English.
