General government deficit and debt in accordance with EMU criteria
Twice yearly the Member States of the European Union report data on their so-called EMU deficits and debts to the EU Commission. The data are used in the context of the EU's Stability and Growth Pact to assess the state of government finances in the Member States. The reporting is a constituent part of what is known as the Excessive Deficit Procedure. The reported data are produced in compliance with the European System of Accounts (ESA 1995). Statistics Finland compiles the data relating to past years for the report while forecasts concerning the current year are produced for it by the Finnish Ministry of Finance. The statistical data reported in February 2005 concerning the years 2003 and 2004 are preliminary.
The Statistical Office of the European Communities, Eurostat, publishes data by Member State from the EDP reporting. The data published by Eurostat can be browsed at: http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat. The information can also be found in the monthly publication EC economic data pocket book.
