Finland’s preliminary population figure was 5,549,136 at the end of March 2022

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of March was 5,549,136. During January–March Finland's population increased by 895 persons. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 4,297 higher than that of emigrants. The number of births was 4,889 lower than that of deaths.

According to the preliminary statistics for January–March a total of 11,023 children were born, which is 1,176 fewer than in the corresponding period 2021. The number of deaths was 15,912 which is 1,731 higher than one year earlier.

Altogether 7,016 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 2,719 persons emigrated from Finland during January–March. The number of immigrants was 864 lower and the number of emigrants 300 higher than in the previous year. In all, 1,438 of the immigrants and 1,835 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 58,323 by the end of March. Compared with the previous year, the decrease was 2,351 migrations according to the municipal division of 2022.

According to preliminary data, 3,412 marriages were entered into during January–March, of which 3,318 were marriages of opposite-sex couples and 94 marriages of same-sex couples. Of the same-sex marriages, 63 were between two women and 31 between two men.

The population grew most in Uusimaa

According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Southwest Finland and Central Ostrobothnia between January–March of 2022.

The population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it grew by 2,853 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 716 persons. Relative to the population, population growth was highest in Uusimaa, 1.7 ‰, in Pirkanmaa, 1.4 ‰, and in Central Ostrobothnia, 1.0 ‰.

Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Kymenlaakso that lost 470 persons of its population. The population of Satakunta decreased by 396 persons, which was the second biggest population loss. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Kainuu, 3.2 ‰.

Most migration gain from intramunicipal and international migration was collected by Uusimaa, 2,012 persons and Pirkanmaa, 979 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms based on total net migration was attained by Pirkanmaa, 1.9 ‰, and Uusimaa, 1.2 ‰.

In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the region of Ostrobothnia, 101 persons and Kymenlaakso, 69 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was found in Kainuu, 0.7 ‰ of the population.

During January–March 2022, migration between regions numbered 24,588. The positive gain from migration between regions was seen in Pirkanmaa, Southwest Finland, Kanta-Häme, North Ostrobothnia, South Savo, Central Ostrobothnia and South Ostrobothnia. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Pirkanmaa, 652 persons. Also, the relative migration gain was highest in Pirkanmaa, 1.2 ‰ of the population.

Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in absolute numbers in the region of Ostrobothnia, 273 persons. Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in relative terms in the region of Kainuu, 1.9 ‰ of the population.
