Exports of services fell and imports of services grew in the second quarter of 2023

According to Statistics Finland, the value of service exports fell by four per cent in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the corresponding quarter of the year before. The value of service imports grew by four per cent over the same period. The value of service exports was EUR 7.5 billion and that of imports EUR 10.2 billion in the second quarter of 2023.

The figure describes fluctuations in the level of exports and imports of services between 2013Q1 and 2023Q2 as a line chart. In the second quarter of 2023, the value of service exports was EUR 7.5 billion and that of service imports EUR 10.2 billion. In the second quarter of 2023, imports in international trade in services were EUR 400 billion higher and exports EUR 300 billion lower than one year ago. Imports of services have been exceptionally much higher than exports of services since the first quarter of 2022. In the second quarter of 2023, the difference between imports and exports grew further and was at its highest in the entire time series. The service account was EUR 2.6 billion negative.

Key selections

Exports of goods and services decreased by EUR 2.4 billion (-8%) in the second quarter of 2023 compared to one year ago.
The value of goods and service imports fell considerably more than that of exports, by EUR 3.9 billion (-12%).
The value of goods imports went down by EUR 4.3 billion and the value of goods exports by EUR 2.1 billion. The value of goods exports was EUR 2.3 billion higher than that of goods imports.
The fallen prices of goods from the top figures of the previous year decreased the value of international trade. Data on the volume of international trade can be found in the statistics on quarterly national accounts.
The service account continued declining in the second quarter and was EUR 2.6 billion negative. Exports of services decreased particularly due to the fall in exports of ICT services and imports of services were boosted especially by Finns’ travel abroad.
