Volume of transport in domestic waterborne traffic increased by 16 per cent in January 2024

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the total volume of goods transported in domestic waterborne traffic was 0.4 million tonnes in January 2024. Transport in domestic waterborne traffic increased by 16 per cent compared to January 2023. In January 2024, domestic water transport took place in coastal waterways.

  • In January 2024, oil products and coal and coke were transported most in domestic waterborne traffic.
  • In terms of timber transport, preliminary data are supplemented at the end of the statistical reference year, which has an effect especially on the transport volumes of inland waters.
  • No transport was registered through the Saimaa Canal in January 2024.

Oil products were transported most in domestic waterborne traffic in January

Oil products were transported most, in total 272,591 million, which was 64 per cent of all transport. Coal and coke was transported next most, 67,766 tonnes, making up 16 per cent of all transport. Preliminary data on timber transport are supplemented at the end of the statistical reference year.
